Alaska 2021- July 15-July 21

Alaska 2021 – July 15 – July 21

We went fishing for Halibut off Harry Island and were rewarded with a large halibut! From Harry Island we headed to Neka Inlet.  There were so many crab pots in Neka bay so we set out traps and got six huge crab.  From Neka we moved on to Swanson Harbor and then Auke Bay in Juneau where we said goodbye to Linda and Pete and hello to Josh and Kimberly who are joining us for a week. Our first stop after Auke Bay was Taku Harbor which was the site of a commercial cannery in the early 1900’s. There are remains of old piers, boilers, bunkhouses and electrical generators along the shore. This was the site of a Tlingit tribe that once lived here and a descendant of the tribe has posted information about the area which was great!

Once we left Taku we headed for Tracy Arm and Glaciers! We stayed in No Name Cove and headed to the North and South Sawyer Glaciers 22 miles at the head of Tracy Arm. There are not words to describe the beauty of Tracy Arm so hopefully my pictures will give you an idea of how spectacular this area is – probably my favorite stop on our Alaska trips! The vertical granite walls and glacier polished peaks of up to 5000 feet flank Tracy Arm with U shaped valleys that run between the ridges. We were able to take the boat up to both glaciers and it was spectacular!

Next stop of this leg of our trip was the opposite side of Tracy Arm named Endicott Arm and a very remote inlet named Ford’s Terror. You should only enter on High water slack as tidal currents rush thru the narrowest part of the inlet at great velocity but once thru the surroundings are spectacular – high granite mountains with snow bowls, vertical cliffs and spectacular waterfalls. Once inside you are there for at least 24 hours until the next highwater slack to leave so it is an area that does not see many boats.

We left Ford’s terror on the 21 to anchor in Endicott Arm and cruise to the end of it to the Dawes Glacier. There were a lot of icebergs in the water up to Dawes and it was calving a lot – we got some great pictures although the weather was very rainy and overcast.

We anchored in the entry off of SumDum Glacier and Steve and Josh got to go fishing for a bit – Steve got another Halibut so its fresh fish for dinner!

From the Glaciers of Tracy and Endicott Arm we moved on to SouthFinger Bay then Windfall Island across from Pack Creek Bear Reserve where we said goodbye to Josh and Kimberly.  It has been a fantastic week with both of them on the boat! We got to see bears at Pack Creek which was another highlight of a fantastic week!
